Pilgrim Prairie Garden

Pilgrim Prairie Garden

In September 2024, an 8,000 sq ft native prairie was planted on the church property at 535 Stow street.  A  mixture of 30 low growing native flowers and grasses were used. Native Niche of Campbellsport, WI prepared the ground, supervised the planting and is maintaining the area.

The typical mowed and fertilized turf grass lawn does not support a functioning ecosystem. By using native plants in  a portion of our green space we will absorb more carbon, and provide a diverse habitat that supports pollinators, insects and many microorganisms. The science is clear, climate change and loss of biodiversity are linked.

Our prairie garden has completed its first year—a time of putting down roots. While growth above ground may appear modest, prairie plants spend their first year establishing deep root systems that will sustain them for decades.

To support this phase, the area was mowed three times to prevent weeds from overtaking the young plants. When managed early, annual weeds rarely pose a long-term threat to prairie health.
