Pilgrim Prairie Garden

Pilgrim Prairie Garden

In September 2024, an 8,000 sq ft native prairie was planted on the church property at 535 Stow street.  A  mixture of 30 low growing native flowers and grasses were used. Native Niche of Campbellsport, WI prepared the ground, supervised the planting and is maintaining the area.

The typical mowed and fertilized turf grass lawn does not support a functioning ecosystem. By using native plants in  a portion of our green space we will absorb more carbon, and provide a diverse habitat that supports pollinators, insects and many microorganisms. The science is clear, climate change and loss of biodiversity are linked.

The Second Year 2026 – This is the second spring for our prairie. Annuals will continue to be abundant, and biennial weeds may appear — including Sweet Clover, Burdock, Wild Parsnip, and Queen Anne’s Lace. Mowing before they set seed will help prevent re-infestation.

Native Niche’s assessment of our prairie indicates no major issues, but some maintenance will be done this summer to remove invasive plants and grasses. Clovers and dandelions are not a problem at this time.
